Styles & Embellishments

When you begin envisioning your wedding dreamcake, the options are practically endless. However, there are a few basic choices to be made for every cake.

First is its shape, which is foundational to your cake's theme. Of course, if you can't decide, you can always mix the shapes-round with square is quite popular.

  • Round provides lots of symmetry with a more traditional appearance
  • Square a little more modern due to the well-defined edges
  • Petaled or Scalloped a very feminine, flowery shape

The tiers are also important. Cakes can be stacked directly on top of each other, or separated with columns. The number of tiers is usually determined by how many servings you will need.

Finally, there is the decoration, which includes both color and embellishments. You can find inspiration from a myriad of details you've already planned: a bit of lace from your veil, the color the bridesmaids will be wearing, the season of the year, or even the flowers you've chosen.

While white is traditionally the color for the bride's cake, there is absolutely no requirement for your color choice other than it should complement the other decor. Pastel yellow, pink and blue are quite popular, but vibrant pink and brown or even sage green can be invited to the party.

As for the finishing touches, the sky is the limit. You can have your Monogram iced into the cake or used as a topper, ask your florist to decorate with fresh (pesticide-free!) flowers or use dreamcakes sugar paste florals, or let the icing create a pleasing pattern. Other popular ideas include applying "cake jewelry" or unusual toppers, using real or icing ribbons, and even decorating it with fruit (like chocolate-dipped strawberries on a chocolate cake).
